Design Studio 3

Project 1
'Journey of the Five Senses'

In this project we were required to explore issues of spatial typologies and Poetics through simple design exercises. In a group of 5 we proposed two 'Memorial' themed 'Journey of Five Senses'. The story of our memorials translates the narrative of events given by the lecturere with the help of the precednet Studies

Project 1A - PRECEDENT STUDIES - Analaysing Spatial Poetics and Spatial Typlogies in Architecture

In this Project we indetified and analysed Spatial order and spatial poetics of two inspirational buildings, The Steilneset Memoral which is Linear and the Borobudur which is Concentric. The precedents are analyzed using diagrams, photos and minimal annotations.

Project 1A - PRECEDENT STUDIES - Analaysing Spatial Poetics and Spatial Typlogies in Architecture

Based on the precedent Studies in Project 1A, we were given to design two memorials, one for the MH17 and one for MH370 or the Korean Ferry Tragedy. In the same groups, we translated the poetry into a walk by using 2 contrasting typlologies, (Linear for the Korean Tragedy and Concentric for the MH17 Crash) . Based on our design analysis and process we produced physical models and presentation boards which was presented to the lecturers as final submission.

Project 2
Site Analysis and Concept Development

Group Work - Site Analysis

As a site for project 3, we visited Pulau Besar, a small island near Melacca. As part of Project 2 we were given to produce a microsite analysis of a selected site in Pulau Besar. This exercise developed my site analysing skills and helped me understand the important site context for concept development.

Individual Work - Personal Interpretation and Concept Development

As part of the concept development process we were given to produce two A3 borads of inspirational sketches. These sketches are produced with the aid of the site analysis and personal interpreation of Pulau Besar. During the concept development process i analysed the materiality and siginificant characteristics, sounds, textures that make the place memorable. A final concept was derived from the inspirational sketches and site analysis to present as the concept for the Visitor Interpretative Center (Project 3)

Project 3
Visitor Interpretative Centre

The concept from project 2 was further developed with spatial qualities for this project. The objective of this project is to propose a design scheme with response to the site, functional programme and users' experience.

The Visitor Interpretative Centre was designed to provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the history of the site, and provide accomodation to house and display releavant material and interpretative material for puclic access and information.

This project helped me generate design based on the unique character and conditions of the site context. The main form of my building was derived from a fruit which was found in Pulau Besar. This process taught me to generate design through conscious consideration of section to plan relationshio with human scale, natural light and material/texture. Also this project gave me the ablitity to design a small scale community building with response to the site, functional program and user experience.

For the final 4 A1 boards produced containing the schematic design key section, external spaces with a sectional model.
