Asian Architecture

Project 1
Case Study Paper

The objectives of this project are as follow:

• To integrate architectural design and research through a specific case study, supporting students’ design through extensive research within the framework of sustainability design in Asia.

• To introduce students to activities which culminate in the production of the study; collection, indexing and evaluation of information; analysis of information; compilation and organization of study; writing of study; assembly of illustration and text; design of layout; binding and presentation.

This project is driven by Architectural Design Studio 4, as an approach to support students’ design through extensive research within the framework of sustainability design in Asia. Using the assigned site visit building, Sekeping Serendah for my group, we were required to choose from the given reserach areas individually. Once the research area was confirmed, we conducted extensive literature reviews to identify the specific scope and define specific scope of the study. Using this we generated a reseach title that reflects the research intention and specific scope of study, within the framework of the selected research area and significance of study. A concept mapping was done to highlight the specific scope of the study with research questions to give an overview of the proposed case study. After a presentation of this final proprosal, an A4 report of 3000 words was compiled.

This project gave me the ability to analyse and discuss indepth on the selected research area bases on the assigned building, within the frameowrk of sustainable design. Furthermore, i was able to identify significant elements of sustainable design through investigation and produce a ciritical interpretation orally and in writing.

Project 2
Documentation Study

The objectives of this project are:

- to develop critical perspectives on architecture and urbanism in situations where tradition, modernity and globalization intersect through an exploration of South, Southeast and East Asian architecture

- to improve and develop students knowledge and understanding of selected aspects Asian architectural and urban design through first hand experience gained through a study visit to an appropriate local or overseas location relevant to the theme.

- to develop in each student increasing skills and independence in information gathering, visual and verbal analysis and critical synthesis

- to develop in each student increasing skills in clear, effective written communication, emplying recognized scholarly and professional conventions.

- to enhance further students' interpersonal and intra personal skills.

Working in a group of six members, we were required to select an appropriate street and identify and capture any architectural elements as visuals/symbols that construct the semiotic interpretation of the street or its iconography. The observations were captured photography series with a written summary. An A2 size manual sketched streep map was produced as the group task for this project. A series of 10 photographs for a selected theme from each memeber was compiiled to an A4 photobook.

This project taught me the historical development of the main strands of Asian Architecture. Through this project i was able to indentify a broad range of issues related to the historical and choronlogical transitions asian architectural history. Furthermore, i was able to interpret architectural language in relation to the development of asian architecture and urbanism based on theme of tradition, modernity and globalization.
