Building Structures
Project 1
Fettuccine Truss Bridge
The objectives of this project are as follows
-
To develop student’s understanding of tension and compressive strength of construction materials
-
To develop student’s understanding of force distribution in a truss
-
To design a perfect truss bridge which fulfils the following criterias:
-
High level of aesthetic value
-
Minimal construction material
-
In a group of 5 members, we were required to design and construct a fettuccine bridge of not less than 750mm clear splan and a maximum weight of 200g. These requirements are to be met, or else it may result in reduction of grade. The bridge will be then tested to fail. Other than its aesthetic value the bridge was tested for its efficiency. After the testing, an A4 report was produced which included precedent study and details of the bridge design. As an individual task we were given to analyse and do calculation for a typical truss.
Upon completion of this project, i was able to evaluate, explore and improve attributes of construction materials, and apply understanding of load distribution in a truss. i was able to evaluate and indentify tension and compression members in a truss and explore different arrangement of members in a truss structure.
Project 2
Extension of a R.C Bungalow
The objectives of this project are as follows:
ï‚·- To introduce the basic process of building structures design process to the students.
ï‚·- To enable the students to have a holistic experience including Concept and Structure Layout Design, Building Structure Engineering - Considerations, Structure Members Sizing and Calculations, Final Report and Presentation.
This project was divided into two parts, first part done in a group and second part as individual work. in a group of 6 members, we were given to obtain floor plans of a maximum 3 story bungalow. We carried out structural analysis and prepared structural drawing for the chosen bungalow. The structural plans include foundation plan, ground floor plan, first floor plan and roof plan.
For the individual part, we worked in a sub group of 2 members to propose an extension work for the bungalow. As the individual task each member was required to analyse 6 beams and 3 columns.
Through the exercises of this project i was able to produce a complete documentation on structural system of a case study. it gave me the ablity to explore and understand the concept of structural analysis and indentification of structual components. Moreover, i was able to recognize, execute and impliment basic procedures of building structure design and produce structural proposal.
